The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
This amendment affirms the powers of the states.
Gay Marriage
The states deciede whether or not to allow gay marriage, the Federal government does not regulate this.
United States
Each state makes its own laws and regulaitions, each has its own constitution. But the states must also follow what the federal government says. Article 10 says what the states can and cannot do, and makes sure that states do not step on the federal governments toes.
The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
This amendment protects our rights to privacy.
Abortion
Abortion has long been debated. It is argued that the 9th amendment protects women's rights to choose. She has rights to privacy, and there for should be able to make her own decisions and not have them made for her.
9th Amendment PSA
The 9th amendment says that Americans have many other rights than just the ones that are listed in the Constitution. And just because a right is not specifically stated in the Constitution does not mean that anyone can be denied that right.
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
This amendment protects us from harsh punishments and large fines used to keep people in jail.

In some place the punishment for stealing is having your hand cut off. But in America this is "cruel and unusual" and illegal for law officials to do.
The 8th amendmet protects the accused from excessive bail and fines. The sentencing has to be reasonable compared to the crime that has been commited. So the death penetly cannot be sentenced for speeding . Or a fine can't be set at $1 million dollars for a parking violation.
In Suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.
This amendments guarantees that all people have a jury trial.

All have the right to a jury of their peers, so that they may have a fair chance in their trial. Juries can be chosen by the lawyers and there is a very scientific way of doing this. Like in the clip each lawyer wants to pick the jury that think will best help their case.

The Jury decides whether the defendant is guilty or innocent by looking at evidence and hearing testimony. The jury does not decide what the sentence is, and can also be overruled by the judge if they believe that the jury has disregarded facts and evidence. This clip shows what the jury has to do as it pertains to the 7th amendment.
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.
All people have the right to a public trial and a jury of their peers. They have the right to a speedy trial, they cannot be kept without formal charges. The accused must also be read the charges being brought againist them.

While a public trial can be embaressing it can also gain support from those that hear about it and can weigh on the outcome of the trial.
6th Amendment
All people, under the 6th amendment, have the right to a speedy trial in a timely manner. This is so innocent people are not kept in jail for an unnecessary length of time. As well as allowing the defendant to defend themselves against the charge.
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
This amendment says that a person cannot be tried for the same offence more than once. It also protects from cruel and unusual punishment. It also says that one can not be forced to testfiy aganist themselves.

The 5th amendment protects all from having to testify against themselves, so they can't incriminate themselves. Like in the clip, this amendment allows the defendant to have a fair trial whether they committed the crime or not.
Miranda rights
The 5th amendment ensures that when you are arrested you are made aware of a few things. Like stated in the Miranda rights you do not have to say anything to the police. You also can get an attorney, and the government MUST get you one if you cannot afford your own.

This amendment ensures the security of: persons, houses, papers and effects from unreasonable search and seizer. Police must have a warrant to search. It says that police can't arrest anyone they want just because.

Some rights have been taken away in past years to "protect" the American public. But these steps that have been taken have completely ruled out an entire amendment.

This amendment stops soildiers from coming into and staying in a persons home at any time, during war or not.

3rd Amendment: No Quartering Soldiers
Before the 3rd amendment, in soldiers were able to go into anyone's home and occupy it for as long as they choose to do so.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
The second amendment gives citizens the right to have guns.

Americans sign petition to repeal the first amendment
Because they didn't know what the first amendment was, people were willing to sign away their freedom because of the bad things it allows. But, like everything with the good comes the bad, just because some take advantage of the Constitution does not mean that should ruin it for everyone else. People take their rights for granted and don't think about where they come from, or how they get them.
